We just thought we’d put him in a big boy bed

For months I have been searching for a toddler bed I like. The majority of them are plastic things that I find revolting. I’m a furniture snob. I admit it.

I’ve searched the internets. We’ve visited many a furniture store in town. At long last I caved and said let’s go to the land of cheap furniture at even cheaper prices. Ikea. Lo and behold I found a bed. It was this awesome raised bed that you had to climb a ladder to get up into. But the coolest part was there was this fort thing underneath. Oh man the boy would love it. Only problem was at the time he couldn’t climb a ladder.

The trusty husband suggested a bed that was lower to the ground that had a frame above it. I poo-pooed it stating that it wasn’t nearly as cool as the fort bed. We agreed that we would wait until later.

So today we decided to revisit our local Ikea. You see… I did some internets looking and realized that the bed the trusty husband liked and the bed I liked were the exact same bed. It’s reversible. You start with it as a low bed and then as the child grows you flip it over to be the cool fort bed. 2 bed for the same price. And it’s a twin so we wouldn’t have to buy a special toddler bed. What could be better?

We get to the store. Hem and haw over the bed. Try to find a bed rail for said bed so rocking little boy doesn’t fall out. No such luck. Call SIL in California to see what bed rail she used for Bethany. Decide that yes! this bed will work. Ask less than helper chicky what aisle the bed is on… same less than helper chicky who was less than helpful with the bed rail situation.

“Oh, that bed is not in right now. They are reintroducing it in the fall.”

fan. fricken. tastic.

They are changing the blue color on the solid panels so therefore they aren’t selling this particular bed until sometime in the fall. What does sometime in the fall mean? Dunno. Maybe Ikea is run by the Russian government.

We bought a plastic one…. you are right… it is so hard to find a decent toddler bed that will not fall over if you blow on it or is pure plastic crap.

I figured we will shell out the bucks for her twin bed…

That bed you found sounds so cool… does ikea have a catalog you can order it from? I wish we had an ikea close by.

Big girl bed transition is a fun one btw

Why are they selling something that they aren’t selling!! Looking for a bait and switch…might deserve a call to the store to have them mark it so others don’t have it happen to them too….it is not difficult to put a sign that says not due in until fall 07….sorry that you had to endure the frustration…

  4. LOL

You know, I wouldn’t be surprised. Did you see the 2 million signs for the Ikea store on the way into Moscow from the airport????? I think we took a pic of the store, too.

We had a problem with the bed thing, too. Her crib was useable as a toddler bed by taking off the front rail. That was great, except when found out we’d be needing that crib again, so we went on the hunt. Not being able to find anything we liked, the trusty husband decided to build it! And he did a fine job, too! We wanted it lofted, not necessarily for forting (though that is a fun option–just attach blankets and voila!)but because her bedroom is so small, we wanted more space for her princess stuff 😉

I will have to post a pic some time! He’s quite proud of his accomplishment 🙂

I hope you are able to find it at another Ikea or something! Fall isn’t too far away… but then, I’m not exactly sure how far away “sometime in fall” is…

So NOT an IKEA fan. That said, here in St. P it is an easier place to shop than most… Hope your ship, er, bed comes in soon.

I finally gave up on the Toddler Bed (they are terrible, you are right!) and got a twin bed that has two bars on it so it is like a toddler bed, just bigges. But, if you’re still looking, I saw a nice one at Pottery Barn Kids.

Hey now, no dissing my grocery store when I get homesick! 🙂

But I totally understand the frustration of not finding what you want, when you want it. It could be worse though, a few years back we bought big awesome corner couch before the holiday seasonl and then it went on sale at Christmas time for much, much less. Hubbie got very peeved and actually talked IKEA into giving us the difference back.

Oh Lena, I forgot to mention that my husband is a Swede too. Only born in the US. So by association I get to dis all things Swede.

  9. Cute bed. Hope you get it soon….. maybe fall lines start in August like clothes?!

    Did you check Ebay?

I like your husband already. 😉

I love Ikea but unfortunately I am about 6 hours away from the nearest one. I always use their “check stock” option for the store before I make the drive for big items. You might check the stock at other Ikea stores near you and see if the bed is available from them.

Yeah we tried the plastic toddler bed, too. It lasted ONE night. We split Bonnie’s bunk beds and Clyde’s had a twin bed since he got home, with the side rails. There was no way he was sleeping in that toddler bed.

  13. I can’t even tell you how many problems we have had with IKEA. I wouldn’t know where to begin. I really like IKEA’s style; however, so I usually suffer through it. What will you do now?

Actually most of IKEA’s furniture makes total sense, just look at the picture and start using your musclepower.

I love IKEA because they have all my Swedish necessities – chocolate, meatballs, cookies, cereal, blueberry soap, syrup, sugar, crisp bread, juice … mmm, chocolate. 🙂

  15. Did someone say chocolate?

  16. Man I can not stand the help in that store. I went there to buy the buckets for those centerpieces and were told they were out of stock – but I found them here and there all over the place and the stupid guy wouldn’t even help me look.

Hope they get that bed in soon. It sucks that they don’t even try to find it for you at another store and have it shipped.
