That is the motto our family had adopted. We are focusing on the one good thing each day. If we don’t it becomes too overwhelming.
Yesterday was a very good day. The girls (Derek’s sisters and niece) visited Mom in the morning. The doctor and nurses thought it would be better if they give her something to keep her from getting so agitated. On Saturday she spent a good part of the day pretty pissed off and was taking it out on people. Hey, I would be pissed too if I was going through what she was going through. That being said, she was pulling on tubes, pulling off her head dressings and generally being a pain in the ass. That is totally not said to be mean. The choices were to keep her restrained or to give her something to calm her down. They went with the latter. We didn’t ask if she was still medicated Sunday night, but it didn’t appear that she was. Either that or it is a really good drug that I need to look into for myself.
Let me back up on the day for a moment.
The girls visited her in the morning where she was able to take a short walk in the ICU and then sit in a chair for a while. This was our good thing for the day. After the visit the girls came up to our house so they could celebrate Oleg’s birthday with us. I’m so happy they did. We were able to spend a bit of time together as a family (minus mom and dad of course).
Oleg had a great party and the icing on the cake (so to speak) was his birthday gift from us. We surprised him with a trip to Disneyland. We are leaving in about 10 minutes. The look on his face was priceless.
The party was early enough in the day and the guests didn’t hang around much after the gift opening I thought it would be nice to go down to see Mom before our trip. We saved her a piece of cake and Dad wanted to hear about the surprise.
When we got there Mom was awake and all smiles. The girls had purchased her a soft hat to keep her head warm and cover up the awesome haircut the nurses gave her. She had walked 2 laps of the ICU in the afternoon and ate all of her dinner by herself. These are very good things.
With any luck she will move to a real room today and then maybe home on Tuesday or Wednesday.
Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers. We can’t do this without them.
Happy Birthday Oleg and hoping for a speedy recovery for MIL
