Why does this always happen to me?

I come up with a great sketch for a header. I’m excited about it. I am dumb and can’t figure out illustrator so I do the ol’ sketch by hand and scan method for creating most of my headers. If you have no clue what I’m talking about maybe this will help.

This is a sketch I did

This is the digital version.

I then copied it and flipped it around

Thus making this header

For this site, but they didn’t pick this header. They picked the one on the site.

Anyway, I have this great idea, but for some reason every time I try to draw the outline it turns out like crap. The resolution of it is all screwed up. And frankly I’m getting pissed about it. I’ve drawn it twice in Photoshop, 3 times in Illustrator and nada.

What the hell is up with Illustrator. I hear all of these great things about Illustrator and how nice things turn out, but I can’t make a simple layer with a pattern. I have no problems with Photoshop. Granted it took me about 5 years to learn, but Illustrator is for super graphics geniuses and I am certainly not of that caliber. Please! Someone send me a quick and dirty tutorial on Illustrator. Otherwise I’m likely to throw my whole computer out of the window!

  1. Yay! Circle K huh … I used to be in Circle K. Thems some fancy webness there … 🙂

  2. And I’m muddling through Illustrator, too … there are some things I can do much better in Illustrator than InDesign, but then the layers thing throws me for a loop. Sigh.

Tossing the computer seems to be a family trait. I find the whole idea of web designs fascinating but will never be my realm of expertise. I think what you have done with it is amazing!

  6. Ohh boy…as a graphic designer, I’m not a fan of Illustrator but I can probably help you out. Stupid question to start: are you scanning at a high resolution to begin with?

  7. I loved both designs. 😉 I was recently “retired” from my position and am no longer in charge of the trusty website. Thus, the less than up to date version of the files online. Now if I could only retire from studying……

I think both designs are great. I wish I could be as talented as you are. I am crawling my way through Photoshop but don’t have all the time…!
